AutoCAD 2027: What's New and What Changed

Released March 25, 2026 · Autodesk Official

Autodesk just dropped AutoCAD 2027, and this isn't a routine update. For the first time in the software's history, multiple people can edit the same DWG file at the same time. Add AI that actually understands your drawing, a rebuilt cloud platform, and a fully modernized graphics engine — and you have the biggest AutoCAD release in years.

Here's What you need to know

1.Teams Can Finally Edit the Same Drawing at Once

The headline feature is Checkout — and it's a game changer. Multiple teammates can now reserve specific objects or regions of a DWG file and work on them simultaneously. No file conflicts. No waiting for a colleague to save and close. No splitting drawings into chunks just to collaborate. Autodesk Forma manages all the reservations in the cloud, keeping everyone's work separate and conflict-free. This is something none of AutoCAD's native DWG competitors currently offer.

2.The new Autodesk Assistant is built on Model Context Protocol (MCP) — an AI standard developed by Anthropic. What makes it different from other AI tools is context awareness. It doesn't just answer generic questions — it reads your current drawing, understands what you're working on, and gives guidance that's actually relevant to the task in front of you. Ask it in plain English. Get real answers. It's a Tech Preview in 2027, with more capabilities on the way.

3.Autodesk Docs Is Gone. Meet Forma Data Management.

The cloud platform has been rebranded and rebuilt. Forma Data Management Essentials is now included with standalone AutoCAD subscriptions at no extra cost. Connected References automatically detects renamed or moved Xrefs and suggests fixes. Connected Support Files load the right tool palettes and settings automatically based on your active project. AutoCAD on the web now connects to Forma Board for shared canvas collaboration during early design. The old Autodesk Docs workflows are replaced — and the new ones are faster.

4.Your Drawings Get Auto-Cleaned Before You Notice the Mess

Geometry Cleanup is an AI-powered tool that scans your DWG for common errors — gaps, overshoots, duplicate lines, near-coincident geometry — and resolves them automatically. It's especially useful when working with imported data or legacy files. Pair it with Smart Blocks: Detect and Convert, which automatically turns repeated geometry into proper AutoCAD blocks, and you have a seriously efficient drawing hygiene workflow baked right in.

5.Mac Users Finally Get a Real Graphics Engine

OpenGL is out. Apple Metal is in — and it's the only graphics engine on Mac from 2027 onwards. AutoCAD now offloads 3D scene geometry directly to Apple Silicon via the Metal API, delivering faster navigation and smoother performance in complex drawings. On Windows, DirectX 12 brings the same leap forward. Better materials, better lighting, better visual styles. Both platforms are now running on the unified Graphics System Framework (GSF). No DWG file format change was made, so full backward compatibility is maintained.

What's Been Removed

Before you upgrade, check your workflow against this list. The following have been cut from AutoCAD 2027 and replaced by Forma Data Management tools:

  • AutoCAD Web shared views

  • AutoCAD Mobile shared views

  • AutoCAD Shared Views (all platforms)

  • MrSID image format support

  • PostScript file export (PSOUT)

  • OpenGL on Mac

If any of these features are critical to your workflow, review the official AutoCAD 2027 help documentation before upgrading. Most removals have direct equivalents inside Forma Data Management.
